FAQs

Where do you perform?

We are Based in Stourbridge, in the heart of the Black Country. We perform throughout the West Midlands region, surrounding counties, and beyond. We can happily play at events almost anywhere. However, our fee will reflect costs for transport, overnight accommodation, and additional time commitment.

What is your fee?

Our fee will vary, depending on the event, its location, and how long we are expected to be at the venue. This ensures that musicians are adequately compensated for their time, and enables us to cover incurred costs like hiring additional equipment or transport. For an accurate quote, use our contact form, giving as many details as you can about your event. In particular, the date, venue, and number of guests you are expecting are crucial to us in giving an accurate quote.

How long do you play for?

We normally perform for a total of two hours. This can be split into two or three sets as required. Realistically, we need a break of 20 – 30 minutes between sets. 9.00 pm – 10.00 pm and then 10.30 – 11.30 pm are fairly typical set timings. If you have specific requirements, to accommodate a buffet, for example, we can usually work around these.

Do you perform requests?

We can’t usually satisfy spontaneous requests from the audience (unless it’s a number from our repertoire). However, if there is a song you specifically require, a first dance, for example, we can arrange and rehearse this in advance. Please be aware that arranging and rehearsing a song takes time, which may incur an additional fee. It also means that requests should be made at the time of booking rather than just before your event!

Do you provide recorded music between sets?

Yes! We are more than happy to provide recorded music from a playlist before and after our performance and also between sets. Your input into this is more than welcome: simply email a list of numbers that you would like to include! We normally expect to finish providing music by midnight.

Do you allow people up on stage with you?

Not unless they happen to be Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, or someone similar! There are many ways that an exuberant or intoxicated individual can wreck a performance and potentially cause costly damage to equipment. A stage is also a potentially dangerous place, with multiple trip hazards and a great deal of electrical equipment. We don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, but at the same time, we have to protect ourselves, our equipment, and your guests.

How loud are you?

We aren’t a loud band by most standards. However, the style of music we perform demands sufficient volume for dancers to enjoy themselves. We aim to provide a good vibe for those on the dancefloor while enabling other guests to chat comfortably.

Are you self-sufficient in terms of equipment?

We carry our own PA system and lighting equipment, suitable for events of up to around 200 people. I.e. rooms of up to around 300 square metres or 3200 square feet in size. This covers most hotel and conference venues in the UK. For larger events, additional PA and lighting equipment may need to be hired.

How long do you need to set up?

We normally require an hour. This gives us time to set up equipment and sound check, ensuring that everything is perfect for your event. This typically means arrival at 6.00 pm and setup/soundcheck by 7.00 pm. If your event requires the room to be ready for guests earlier than this we can arrange an earlier arrival.

What size stage do you need?

We can comfortably set up in an area of around 4.5 metres wide by 3 metres deep (15 x 10 feet). This includes space for our PA system and all other equipment. It may be possible to work in smaller spaces, but after a while, things start to get a little cramped!

Is your band a fixed lineup or do you use session musicians?

Groovy Funky Things draws on a pool of extremely talented, well-trained, and experienced musicians. The majority of our players earn their entire income from performing and teaching music. Between us, we have many thousands of hours of live performance under our belts! Songs are carefully arranged and notated for each instrument and, if necessary, can be read at sight by guest players. So, while individual musicians may change from gig to gig, the quality of our performance will always be very high!
